Separation and Social Support as Predictors of Emotional and Social Support of Cadets in a Maritime Academy

Abstract:

This study aims to know if separation and social support are predictors of emotional and social adjustments of the cadets in a maritime academy. This study involved 233 cadets of the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific with 227 males and 6 females as respondents. The instruments used are Adjustment and Separation Scale which is a self-made scale made by the researchers and the Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support by Dr. Gregory Zimet. The results posited that 118 got a high level of separation, 176 got a high level of social support, 120 got a high level of emotional adjustment while 119 got a low level of social adjustment. Chi-square results revealed that separation is a significant predictor of emotional and social adjustment. However, social support is not a significant predictor of emotional adjustment and social adjustment. Findings in regression revealed that separation plays an important role in emotional adjustment while social support does not, but 38.5% of variance is caused by separation and social support. On the other hand, both separation and social support predicted social adjustment with 27.2% of variation.
