Ma. Melissa Misagal | Virgilind Palarca

Abstract:

Throughout history, the study of any literary work focused commonly on its meaning, message and other external factors that a reader can absorb, understand and formulate that may affect the formation and creation of a literary piece. What many people have missed or failed to understand and appreciate is that, writing a literary piece is an art. A writer values writing as an expression of his/her own artistry and creativity in producing a literary piece. Macario Tiu, one prominent Davao Literary writer, has shown exemplary artistry and creativity in many of his writings. What is ironic, however is, his works have not been given quality studies. This paper analyzed one of Macario Tiu’s literary works,” Sky Rose,” using the defamiliarization formalistic approach which turn the mundane, an ordinary occurrence into something unfamiliar. Specifically, this study looked into the story through the five elements of defamiliarization: Examining the present, the Distortion of Time, the Descriptive and Active Language and the Simplification and Unlikely Comparison and Creating Contrast. All these were actively and creatively pointed out, analyzed and discussed in this study.
