Preference and Degree of Participation among University Students in the Mass

Abstract:

Students’ attendance and participation in the mass is declining. Liturgical music could make the experience of mass goers noteworthy. This study sought to identify the music preference and degree of participation of the mass goers during the Eucharistic celebration. This one shot case quasi-experimental study involved 30 mass-goer students from two campuses of the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC). They were asked to listen for 30 minutes to the six songs – two Biblical, two inspirational and two prayer-based frequently used in the campus mass. Moreover, a focus group discussion was conducted to enrich the discussion. Results of the study revealed the following song ranking – Table of Plenty ranked 1, Glory and Praise ranked 2, and I Love the Lord ranked 3. Respondents preferred English version of the songs. Findings showed that the respondents rarely heard mass in the campus. There was no enough statistical data to establish the significant association between the students degree of participation in the mass with the songs sung during the Eucharistic celebrations.
