Preferred Musical Instruments and Level of Musical Aptitude of Music Students of the University of the Immaculate Conception

Abstract:

The University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) in Davao City, Philippines is the only school which offers Bachelor of Music Majors in Piano and Music Education in Region XI, Mindanao. The researchers focused on identifying the students’ preferred musical instrument and measured their level of music aptitude. Using a descriptive comparative and correlational design, the researchers conducted surveys and evaluated the respondents’ music aptitude in terms of rhythmic, tonal, and applied musical instrument. Results revealed that respondents preferred the trumpet, horn (brass instruments), oboe, clarinet and bassoon (woodwind instruments). However, these highly preferred musical instruments were not available in the university. Moreover, some respondents also preferred the harp, timpani, chimes and xylophone (percussion instruments) which were also not available. The level of the music aptitude was average with tonal as having the highest category mean.
