The paper describes the results of interviews with a sample of urban poor women on their views and experiences regarding menopause. The responses revealed the participants ' views about what menopause is, the causes of changes in and cessation of the menstrual flow, the symptoms they experience, and the ways they cope with the experience. The author compares the findings with earlier results with middle-class participants, and accounts for the contrasts by referring to elements of their socio-economic status (Eds.).
