The Discourses in “Mga Gapnud sa Kinabuhi Version 2.0”: The Analysis on its Flouted Humor

Abstract:

People can laugh about anything, but not with everyone. Humor is a very subjective concept, and what might be funny for some, might be considered outrageous for others. The research design employed in this study is the Qualitative design, specifically Conversation Analysis. This study was about the types of humor in the episode of interactive radio segment “Mga Gapnud saKinabuhi version 2.0” which were shown in the humorous utterances by the Disc Jockey in the radio segment. Based on the analysis, in the first episode, “Dionisio” all of the maxims were flouted except the maxim of quantity. The maxim of manner got the highest number of flouts with the score of four (4); the maxim of quality in second rank got the score of two (2); and the maxim of relation in the third rank got one (1) point. In the second episode, “Lourdes” the maxim which got the most flouts is the maxim of quantity with the score of four (4). The maxim of quality is in the second rank with the score of two (2) and the maxim of relation in the third rank which got only one (1) point. In the third episode, “Zeny” the most flouted maxim is the maxim of relation which got two (2) points and second in rank in the maxim of manner which only got one (1) point. Six flouts were also recorded in the fourth episode, “Patrick John.” These are consisting of the four (4) flouts in the maxim of relation and two (2) flouts in the maxim of manner. In the fifth episode, “Noel” seven (7) flouts were tallied and the maxim of quantity got the highest number of flouts with the score of three (3); the maxim of manner got two (2); and in the third place are the maxims of quality and relation which both got the core of one (1). In totality, all the four maxims were generally flouted in all the three (5) episodes of the said radio program. It is because, the radio program itself is designed to be comic in nature plus it caters humorous stories from its letter-senders which were also written in a way that produces comic effect. There were many instances that falsehood was used to flout the maxim of quality.
