Science Laboratories in Action: Reconnoitering Tertiary Science Teachers Competencies

Alexander S. Baena

Abstract:

This study determined the level of competence of tertiary science teachers handling science laboratories in St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD) towards proposing relevant in-service teacher training program. The study utilized the descriptive survey method using a science teaching competency tool. The respondents included selected students and the science instructors of the tertiary level of the university. Employing both quantitative and qualitative research methodology, the study used a structured interview guide, and focus group discussions (FGD) to gather data. There were six areas considered, namely: selection and use of process skills, and innovative science curricular projects, application of laboratory techniques in science teaching, the concept of science teaching and technological literacy, promoting student’s achievement and plan and practical activities. The findings supported the proposed in-service training program on the competencies of teachers handling science laboratories at SPUD.
