Discipline: Mass Communication, Media
This is a case study on the influence of blogging in our current techno-cultural society. It delves on how people utilize blogs in their practice of self-expression. The increasing popularity of blogging worldwide compelled the researchers to look at how it is changing the way people communicate and express themselves in an increasingly globalized society where multiplicity of voices have the tendency to drown each other out. Using Marshall McLuhan’s Technological Determinism and Jean-Francois Lyotard’s concepts of postmodernism, this study found out that blogging is, indeed, an effective tool for self-expression. Many, especially the youth, are enthusiastic about the chance to publish their ideas freely through blogging. Also, blogs serve as the new diary or journal, which people enjoy because it is very personalized, representing their own perspective, and not impeded by rules.
