Abstract:

English has a distinctive place in the Philippine education system particularly geared towards the need of Filipino learners to have the basic knowledge of English. The Philippine Electronics and Communication Institute of Technology (PECIT) offers its students this basic knowledge with the aid of electronics and communication technology. Despite of this endeavor, some of the students have deficiencies in their English language proficiencies. This study dealt with the English language proficiency in the four macro skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. It specifically dealt with the proficiency of the Bachelor in Elementary Education student of the said school. The focus of this study was to determine the relationship of social media exposure to the language proficiency. The study revealed that most of the students have mobile phones and face book accounts. In terms of language proficiency, majority of the students belonged to the first level of proficiency in all four macro skills. The intervention of technology and the exposures of the students to social media have considerable impact to their level of English proficiency. The level of English language proficiency and the exposures to the social media are closely associated to enhance their language proficiency. With these findings, an intervention program is proposed for the enhancement of the English language proficiency of the students.
