Effects of Different Soil Amendments on Eggplant Production

Abstract:

The study evaluated the effects of vermicompost tea, sheep manure tea, silkworm waste tea and sargassum tea as soil amendments on the growth and yield of eggplant. It made use of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)-Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with six treatments replicated three times. The different manures were fermented for seven days and applied to the experimental plants with the corresponding treatments every week. Results revealed that plants applied with 50% recommended rate (RR) when combined with all the organic soil amendments have comparable plant height at 30 days after planting (DAT) and 60 DAT than those plants applied with chemical fertilizer. Plants not applied with fertilizer were shortest at 60 DAT. On the other hand, plants applied with 50% RR combined with all organic soil amendments have comparable number and yield of fruits to plants fertilized with 100% urea (inorganic fertilizer). Unfertilized plants produced significantly the least number and yield of marketable fruits than fertilized plants. Using 50% RR combined with all organic soil amendments and 100% RR inorganic fertilizer were found equally profitable with net income ranging from P 687.26 to P 797.13 and ROI ranging from 859.79% to 997.29%.
