Grouping in Perception: A Review of Empirical Findings and Introduction of a New Model

Abstract:

This paper presents a review on perceptual grouping, an important process in object recognition and in the coherent perception of visual stimuli in space and time. It discusses the growth of research on this topic with emphasis on the factors that influence grouping and the debate as to whether it is as an early, pre-attentive and bottom-up process or a late, attentive and top-down one. Insights were offered based on our own empirical findings and in conjunction with previous results, a new model of perceptual organization is proposed.
