A framework of competencies for successful leadership in Paulinian higher educational institutions: A Grounded Theory approach

Wynna Marie Medina

Abstract:

The study sought to develop a framework on leadership competencies of leaders of schools run by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres (SPC) through the grounded theory approach. Using a questionnaire that drew a leadership success profile administered to purposively sampled SPC sisters and lay leaders of SPC schools with at least 15 years of service [with a total of 72 responses (from 59 sisters, 13 lay)] and another questionnaire, determining competencies that lead to leadership success, producing 31 responses from various SPC houses, the study revealed the an emergent framework of competencies for successful leadership in Paulinian higher education institutions (HEIs) that is similar to the characteristics of St. Paul, Fr. Chauvet, and the great SPC Sister-leaders. The emergent framework is also similar to other empirically studied leadership characteristics of business leaders, especially transformational and servant leaders, but only in terms of the generic leadership skills, like strategic visioning, change management, and sound decision making.
