Analytical Study of Land Surface Temperature with NDVI and NDBI Using Satellite Image in Baay-Licuan, Abra, Philippines

NOVER MATSO

Abstract:

This study determined the Land Surface Temperature, NDVI, and NDBI of Baay-Licuan for 1992, 2004, and 2018. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used in this study to determine LST, NDVI, and NDBI. Simple linear regression was used to determine the relationship between LST, NDVI, and NDBI. The findings revealed an increase in the average LST of Baay-Licuan from 2004 to 2018 of about 2.59 °C. This increase is primarily attributed to the effect of climate change. Vegetation cover, especially forest trees, is important to lessen LST. The increase in the average NDVI of the study area suggests an increase in the area’s vegetation cover. NDVI is a useful tool in determining and identifying areas with ground cover and open areas. In addition, NDBI results show that there is a slight change in the built-up areas of Baay-Licuan. Moreover, the negative correlation between LST and NDBI shows that areas with denser vegetation have lower LST, while bare soil and the open regions have higher vegetation. The positive correlation between LST and NDBI indicates that builtup areas increase the LST. It was recommended that the LGU of Baay-Licuan, in full cooperation with DENR, should maintain, preserve, protect, and conserve the vegetation cover of the municipality to mitigate climate change’s adverse impact. The reforestation projects of the DENR should be seriously implemented within the area. The generated NDVI and LST maps could be used by the LGU of Baay-Licuan, particularly the MENRO or MPDO, to prepare Land Cover Maps. Moreover, the NDVI map could be used as input in the preparation of development plans intended for the environment.
