Nephtaly Joel B. Botor | Jaclyn Marie L. Cauyan

Abstract:

This study is a qualitative component of an intervention research on resilience-focused family psychoeducation. It explored how families facing multiple adversities in the Bicol region of the Philippines, make sense of and describe a family. From the FGD among eight mothers and fifteen adolescents, it was found that family was defined according to composition and relations. Family was described as a positive system characterized by helping, bond and unity, responding to needs, having resources to provide for needs, communicating openly, and loving and caring relationship. Role expectations emerged as parents are expected to be responsible providers while children are expected to be obedient, respectful, and well mannered. Insights relevant to the design and implementation of the family intervention are discussed.
