The Intergenerational Patterns of Addictive Behaviors Among Selected Filipino Families: A Case Study

Hannah Jamille M. Jugo | Mariedhanne Louise O. Lanceta | Charina Mae M. Manalo

Abstract:

This study uncovered the intergenerational patterns of addictive behaviors that run in two chosen families. Background of the two families was described, the factors that predisposed them to addictive behaviors were identified, the intergenerational pattern of their addictive behaviors was determined, and then, the two families were compared and contrasted in terms of the etiology and patterns of their addictive behaviors. The study used a qualitative research method, particularly the collective case study design, which allowed the researchers to delve into multiple cases in order to gain broader perspectives about the intergenerational patterns of addictive behaviors. Research participants were selected based on the following criteria: extended family with three generations -- from grandparents to grandchildren -- and engaged with addictive behaviors for at least a year. The researchers used a checklist to identify the qualified participants through a door-to-door pre-survey. The researchers crafted a semi-structured interview guide that helped in uncovering the intergenerational patterns of addictive behaviors. Within-case and cross-case thematic analyses were done to analyze the gathered data. Findings revealed that there were existing patterns of predisposing and perpetuating factors of the two families’ addictive behaviors. Social Factors (SF) of varying kinds predisposed both cases’ addictive behaviors. While the common perpetuating factors of the families’ behaviors were different manifestations of Positively Reinforcing Factors (PRF), only Family A exhibited Defiance (D). These findings were supported by the Family Systems Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Biopsychosocial model. The researchers recommended that these data be used to help and encourage the authorities to partner with local government units in order to share knowledge and implement preventive measures against addiction among Filipino families in the country.
