Effectiveness of the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program: Basis for Its Enhancement

Abstract:

This is a descriptive study on the effectiveness of the comprehensive guidance and counseling program of a University as basis for its enhancement. It employed the quantitative method of research using a validated researcher-made questionnaire. Respondents were purposively chosen from the graduating college students of the University, School Year March 2017. Simple percentages and weighted mean were the statistical tools used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that majority of the respondents were males, aged 18-20 years old, full-time students, and residents of Cagayan de Oro City. In general, the comprehensive guidance and counseling program was found “Very Effective” by the respondents from the seven (7) colleges, namely: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Criminology, Education, Maritime Education, and Nursing”. However, the respondents from the Computer Studies rated the program as only “effective”. Among the various services, rated least was the counseling service. The respondents’ perception of the comprehensive guidance and counseling program when grouped according to profile considering their age, gender, college and type of students were not significantly different. However, there was a significant difference of students’ perception when grouped as to place of origin. Students from Misamis Oriental and from other cities and provinces tended to have better perceptions on the effectiveness of the guidance services than those coming from Bukidnon and within the city of Cagayan de Oro. The respondents’ suggestions to enhance the comprehensive guidance and counseling program of the University includes intensification of the counseling services; review of the placement services such as the re-scheduling of the preemployment preparation seminar and mock job interview and technological innovations on the utilization of social media for information dissemination. Although, the overall result revealed that the program was highly functional and had met the needs and expectations of the students, some of its services still need enhancement. Thus, the findings of this study were used as bases in the revision of the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program for 2018-2023.
