Discipline: education and teaching

Abstract:

This study aimed to assess the efficacy of Integrated Reading Strategy as an aid to help the Grade 10 students improve their reading comprehension level. This study used the quasi-experimental method of research design. A purposive sampling was used in selecting two heterogeneous classes that served as the respondents of the study. These sections were identified as the experimental group and the control group. An adapted 50-item test was administered to both groups for their pre-test and the post-test. Moreover, only the experimental group was exposed to the treatment. To have an accurate interpretation of the data, weighted mean, standard deviation, and T test were employed. The results revealed that in the pretest, the proficiency level of both groups was Frustration. However, during the posttest, the proficiency level of the experimental group moved up from the frustration level to the instructional level while the control group remained to be at the frustration level. The finding of the study disclosed that there was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest of the control group and experimental group. Further, the data showed that the difference in the mean scores of the experimental group in the posttest provides sufficient evidence to reject the hypothesis, hence, there was significant difference found between the groups. Therefore, integrating different reading strategies at the same time could help the students improve their reading comprehension level. Teachers may utilize the use of integrated reading strategy in their reading classes especially to the learners with reading comprehension difficulty
