Abstract:

Assessing the knowledge of the students in academic writing during this time of pandemic is demanding. Students’ experiences and challenges in answering their module in academic writing encourage the researcher to push through this research. Hence, this study aimed to determine the level of knowledge of students in academic writing through the use of Self-Directed Learning Tool as intervention. It used a quasi-experimental research design involving two independently selected groups of Grade 12 students as (1) a control group applied the standard academic writing module from Department of Education (DepEd), and (2) the experimental group used the standard module and the proposed intervention made by the researcher. Both groups underwent preliminary and final examinations with a similar set of questions that were reviewed and validated by an expert panel of evaluators using Pilot Testing and the calculated Cronbach Alpha. The gathered data were analyzed through the use of frequency distribution, mean, and standard deviation for descriptive statistics, while Mann-Whitney U Test, Kruskal Wallis Test, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test were used for inferential statistics. The results showed that both groups began with the same level of performance that did not meet expectations. The significant difference between the two groups was also noteworthy, indicating that the applied intervention was effective in developing the students’ level of knowledge in academic writing. Given the results gathered, it is suggested that students, particularly those who need it the most, use the intervention self-directed tool to further their knowledge of academic writing. There are four identified factors that have been identified as the cause of their difficulties answering the modules, and using the suggested module output, these can be solved. It will serve as an affiliate tool for students especially those most in need to address their learning deficiencies in academic writing
