Abstract:

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the lives of the Filipinos is evident, particularly on poor families. Their lives became more challenging, which sparked our curiosity on how they try to achieve ‘ginhawa’— an indigenous Filipino psychological concept. This interest pushed us to conduct the study; we sought to know how do poor Filipino married couples live in the pandemic, discover their concepts of ‘hirap’ and ‘ginhawa’, and understand how to achieve ‘ginhawa’. We used pagpapakuwento among eight pairs of poor Filipino married couples in Cabuyao, Laguna. Then, the data were analyzed using KJ analysis. Analysis revealed that currently, poor Filipino married couples live with fright for their health, are stuck in deciding between two things, have tighter budget, and are coping to the changes brought by the pandemic. We also found out that ‘hirap’ may be a result of losing their ‘hanapbuhay’, living with a tight budget and having conflicts with their ‘kapwa’, and is experienced through ‘kabigatan ng loob’; for ‘ginhawa’, it may come from living a simple life, having a ‘hanapbuhay’, being healthy, and maintaining good relationships with their families and ‘kapwa’, and is experienced through ‘panatag at maluwag na loob’. We also discovered that to achieving ‘ginhawa’ is based on few considerations related to a person’s control.
