Grit and conscientiousness: Academic achievement of college students in the time of COVID-19 and Philippine curriculum revisions

Abstract:

This paper explores the relationship between two personality characteristics: grit and conscientiousness and academic achievement. A sample size of 867 was established across one university’s eight colleges using the Raosoft software. The sample was then proportionally allocated to every college and respondents were randomly selected. The study assessed the role of grit in the learning environment by determining if grit, indeed, affects academic achievement. Further, it extends prior research by analyzing the mediating role of conscientiousness between grit and grade and the relationship between grit and grade by decomposing the former into two components, perseverance of effort and consistency of interest. Findings underscored the importance of grit and conscientiousness as personality traits affecting college students’ academic achievement. Both grit and conscientiousness are related to academic achievement. However, these relationships can be examined in detail later.
