A Review on the Trends and Issues of Biotechnology in the Philippines

Abstract:

Biotechnology, which combines life sciences and technology, is the use of living organisms to create useful products. It also encompasses all activities related to human and animal health and well-being. The Philippines was the first ASEAN member state to create a biotechnology regulatory body, forming the National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines (NBCP). This study demonstrates how the country has made scientific advances in the subject using a literature search conducted through online journal databases. Results revealed current trends such as the production of transgenic crops, microbial inoculants, and quick diagnostic kits. Although the country recognizes the enormous potential of biotechnology, certain issues such as decreased productivity, economic integration, stringent regulatory policies, technology transfer, food security and safety, and human resources must be addressed in order to fully realize biotechnology goals.
