Service-Learning in Nursing Education: Integrative Literature Review

John Mark Lingcon

Abstract:

This literature review aims to provide a thorough analysis, in effort to yield in-depth understanding, of the concept servicelearning as contextualized in the nursing education. Integrative literature review was used to explore the concept of servicelearning in nursing education. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was utilized as search structure and design. Literature and articles published in the past 10 years (2013-2023) were reviewed from scientific databases such as in Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), Scopus, ProQuest, PubMed, and Science Direct to identify relevant peer reviewed primary source publications. This integrative review strengthened the significance and relevance of service-learning in nursing education. Service-learning as both pedagogy and philosophy, helped nurse educators to create and produce student nurses imbued with knowledge, skills, attitude, and advocacy. However, despite of the positive inputs of service-learning, it remains to be less realized.
