Abstract:

The study aimed to trace the graduates of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) of Universidad de Zamboanga from 2015-2019. Particularly, to determine the characteristics of the graduates, employability status, and the required competencies learned by the graduates. The researchers used the descriptive-research design and utilized the convenience and purposive sampling techniques in the identification of respondents. A standardized instrument from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) was adapted for this study. A total of 92 graduates successfully completed the survey representing the total population of 2015-2019. The findings revealed that the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduates were female, single, board-certified nurses, and sought-after professionals and were currently employed in health care services aligned with the curriculum they were trained in. They hold technical and supervising positions at the middle management level and are currently employed with tenureship/permanent plantilla positions. Although, most of the gross income is low, and the graduates do not indulge themselves in pursuing professional development by taking either master's or doctorate degrees in the field of expertise aligned to their job. Compensation and benefits play an integral reason in staying in their job. Communication and critical thinking skills that were learned during the BSN education were of utmost essential in their first job as a nurse professional. It is recommended that the institution should maintain a quality standard of nursing education and practice for the beginner nurse practitioner preparation for their job and professional development. Other areas such as faculty qualifications, facilities, and professional development of faculty must be further strengthened.
