Psychosocial Hazards in the Workplace Experienced by Teachers of Universidad de Zamboanga: Basis for the Implementation of Occupational Safety and Health Plan

Abstract:

The study was conducted to identify the psychosocial hazards experienced by the teachers of Universidad de Zamboanga at their place of work. More specifically, it sought to determine the 1) level of psychosocial hazards experienced by the respondents in terms of demands at work, work organization and job content, interpersonal relations and leadership, work-individual interface, value at the workplace, health and well-being, and offensive behavior; 2) whether there is a significant difference in the level of psychosocial hazards when analyzed according to their profile; and 3) the occupational safety and health plans based on the findings. The study utilized a standardized survey questionnaire for working communities called the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ). Following the descriptive quantitative method, the study employed randomly selected 100 respondents. It concluded that (1) the participants gave an ideal picture of their workplace, that none of the psychosocial hazards in the COPSOQ significantly influenced their behavior in the workplace; and that (2) there is no significant relationship between the respondents’ gender, age-group, and work status and the categories of psychosocial hazards except for “Demands at Work” and “Years at Work”, which yielded a significant result for those who have been working for 6 to 10 years at Universidad de Zamboanga. The study also designed an intervention plan called “Identifying and Managing Psychosocial Hazards in the Workplace” to prevent and counter the effects of psychosocial hazards in the respondents’ workplace. The generally positive results may be attributed to UZ’s proper and functioning channels (i.e., QMS and global certifications).
