Michael Vincent P. Caceres

Discipline: sport and exercise sciences

Abstract:

Archiving sources on H. Diaz is important because it shows two things: (1) the commitment of Universidad de Zamboanga to the preservation and promotion of Olympic sports for producing the first Olympic gold medalist alumna and (2) Philippine Olympic Sports encourages various universities to consider weightlifting as a source of inspiration in making the country as a powerhouse of Olympians in this event. Archiving or collecting sources on H. Diaz was the primary objective of this project; it covered field interviews, video documentation, and written materials as a blueprint for future possible writing documentation in the field of sports. The field interviews were conducted in the different schedules as agreed by the participants and field researchers. The interviews were administered by qualified field researchers and the principal researcher serving as the archivist. The field interviews were participated by Councilor Elbert “Bong” Atilano (coach), Dr. Cecile Atilano (coach), Allen Jayruz A. Diaz (coach/cousin), Eduardo Diaz (Father), Emelita Francisco Diaz (Mother), and Maria Pilar Diaz-Jimenez (Sibling). The participants revealed that winning the gold and silver medals was part of the long process of preparation for H. Diaz, the family, the coaches, and the entire village. It was a struggle; a dream, a passion turn reality. The project is a key instrument for developing Olympic sports not just in the academe but also showcasing cultural achievement as a nation. The collection of sources on H. Diaz followed strict documentation process by employing research design and procedures such as historical, historiography, archival, and narratives specifically in Zamboanga City. The participation of informants was carefully selected. The procedures in the data collection conducted in this project adhered to the principle of scientific research. The project would recommend a biography book writing on H. and the possible mounting exhibition of one of the greatest alumni the university ever produced.
