Music Therapy: Its Effect on the Physiological Status and Anxiety Level of Patients undergoing Hemodialysis

Abstract:

This study determined the effect of Music Therapy on the Physiological Status and Anxiety Levels of Patients undergoing hemodialysis. It explored other factors that may affect the Anxiety Level of Hemodialysis patients. The study employed the explanatory concurrent mixed-method design. Quantitative data were gathered by using a Physiological Monitoring Sheet to get the Blood Pressure, Oxygen Saturation, Temperature, and Pulse Rate of Hemodialysis patients in 6 different cycles – Pre-Hemodialysis, 1st Cycle, 2nd Cycle, Middle Cycle, 3rd cycle, and Post Hemodialysis, and by using the Standardized Beck Anxiety Inventory – I for Anxiety Assessment Pre and Post Hemodialysis, with and without Music Therapy and test the differences of these two groups. Qualitative data were collected using an unstructured interview for patients to elicit responses regarding other factors that affect their Anxiety Level during the procedure. 60 patients were involved in this research – 30 for the controlled group and 30 for the experimental group. Findings revealed that Music Therapy has a therapeutic effect on Blood Pressure, Oxygen Saturation, and Pulse Rate of Hemodialysis Patients. Meanwhile, Music Therapy has no significant effect on the Temperature and Anxiety Level of patients undergoing hemodialysis. Patients identified the following themes as other factors which can contribute to the Anxiety Level of Hemodialysis Patients: Physico-Psychological Disturbances, Fear of the Unknown, Inability to Perform Social Roles and Functions, and Financial Instability. A Proposed Nursing Intervention Programs entitled “DO-RE-MI” (Doing Recreation with Musical Intervention): The Magic of Music Therapy and its Healthy Harmony to Hemodialysis patients for the Quantitative findings, and a 2 Hour Musical Support Group Discussion for the Qualitative results, were proposed based on the findings of the study.
