The Impact of Cultural Integration to the Academic Performance of Muslim Students

Abstract:

The Muslim migration to predominantly Christian urban areas of Bacoor City rendered some repercussions such as psychological, social, and educational impact on their children who have to adjust to their new-found school often administered with less sensitive policies and programs resulting in difficulties in their academic performance. The study focused on the extent of the cultural integration of the 219 third-year Muslim students from different high schools in Bacoor City in terms of lifestyle, social support, family life, cultural cynicism, and academic performance. It was found out that the extent of cultural integration in terms of lifestyle, social support, and family life is high. However, cultural cynicism just resulted to average. The academic performance of the respondents ranges from 85% to 89% described as very satisfactory. However, significant and negative correlations were found between cultural integration and academic performance. Regression weights confirming the predictive value of cultural cynicism to academic performance were likewise noted. It was proposed that the Guidance Program offered to Muslim students and other indigenous students be culturally sensitive.
