Abstract:

This study aims to explore the relationship between social-emotional skills, study skills and engagement of international students in China. The main goal of the study was to explore how socio-emotional skills and learning skills affect international students’ engagement in Chinese higher education institutions. This study is important for understanding the adaptation and success of international students in the Chinese higher education environment. This will not only help educators design more effective teaching strategies, but also promote the holistic development of international students. This study uses the quantitative methods to collect data from international students with different backgrounds in multiple Chinese universities. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires to assess the level of students' social-emotional skills, study skills and student engagement. The study used statistical methods such as correlation analysis and regression analysis to test the relationship between the three variables. The results show that social-emotional skills have a significant impact on both study skills and student engagement. In addition, study skills play a mediating role between social-emotional skills and student engagement, highlighting the key role of study skills in the academic integration process of international students. These findings highlight the importance of developing social-emotional and study skills to improve student engagement. This study is important for understanding the adaptation, aiming to promote an inclusive educational environment and enhance the internationalization and global competitiveness of Chinese higher education. Future research will further explore the moderating effects of cultural adaptation and language proficiency on educational experience and evaluate the generalizability of these findings in different cultural contexts.
