The imminent, enduring, yet unpredictable threat to life, such as features in combat situations, is the most intense stressor known to the human species (Jones, 2006). Foot soldiers, in particular, bear the brunt of this kind of stress as they confront or exercise violence in performing their duty as the legitimate bearers of arms for the purpose of protecting this country and its people. The mental health status of active duty troops should be of concern not only to the military establishment, but to private citizens as well.
