Abstract:

This is a quasi-experimental study that sought to determine the effect of lecture in improving biosecurity knowledge and practices in the prevention and control of African swine fever among smallholder pig farmers in Barangay Lower Salug Daku, Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur. The intervention involves a lecture group who received a 1-day lecture-seminar on biosecurity measures and a control group who did not undergo any intervention. The study was conducted with 42 smallholder pig farmers:22 in the lecture group and 20 in the control group. A 15-item knowledge questionnaire and 19-item practice checklist were used before and after the intervention to assess the knowledge and practices of the respondents. After the preintervention assessment, the intervention was conducted and post evaluation of knowledge and practices were done 3 times at 4 weeks interval. Data were gathered and analyzed using chi-square for comparing the demographic data and number of passers for both knowledge and practice results and T-test was used to compare the mean scores in each phase. Results revealed that for the number of passers in the knowledge evaluation, there was initially no significant difference between the control and the lecture group. After the intervention, it was noted that the lecture group has significantly higher number of passers, consistently 100% in all three post evaluations compared to a consistent 80% in the control group, with p-value of 0.027. A significant improvement in the practice results were observed in the lecture group on post 2 with 5 passers and post 3 with 8 passers, supported with the p-values 0.023 and 0.003, respectively when compared with the control group with consistently 0 passers. This study concludes that the lecture was effective in increasing the knowledge and improving the practices of smallholder pig farmers in the lecture group. The researcher acknowledges potential information spillover among farmers within the group, pre-existing biosecurity knowledge in the area, and potential bias due to farmers' awareness of the survey, which may lead to socially acceptable responses rather than actual practices or belief.
