Abstract:

Medication compliance refers to the individual’s behavior to adhere to the prescribed regimen by the health care provider as a response to the rise of conditions that affect individuals’ capability to perform activities in daily living. The study determines the effects of medication compliance on the health condition of Senior Citizens with Hypertension and Diabetes in Barangay Tetuan and Divisoria, Zamboanga City, Philippines. It seeks to (a) identify the effects of medication compliance on the health condition of Senior Citizens and (b) determine the significant difference in medication compliance to the health conditions with association to their profile. Using a descriptive-quantitative design, data were collected from 148 compliant respondents through a checklist questionnaire. It was tabulated and analyzed with the use of a weighted mean to calculate the weighted responses of the respondents. Frequency and percentage were used to ascertain and delineate the demographic profile of the respondents, and the T-test, ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis were employed to explore the significant difference in demographic profile. Findings indicate an overall satisfaction among Senior Citizens with the effects of medication compliance on their overall health. However, healthcare costs emerged as a barrier to the success of the goal of treatment. Age and civil status were found to significantly influence health outcomes in conjunction with medication compliance, while variables such as barangay, sex, and present health condition with maintenance showed no significant differences. These underscore the impact of medication compliance on achieving optimum health among Senior Citizens.
