Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus, a global chronic metabolic disorder, is causing a rise in non-adherence to medication, necessitating a study to identify contributing factors. While numerous studies have explored this issue, this research uniquely approaches the problem by focusing on a specific community, Barangay Campo Islam. The objective was to determine the factors influencing medication non-adherence among diabetic patients in this community and to explore their alternative therapies and suggestions for improved compliance. This study involved twenty respondents, all selected randomly and aged between Eighteen (18) to over Sixty (60) years old. Data were collected through face-to-face, house-to-house interviews, ensuring ethical compliance and respondent confidentiality. By using recording devices, researchers accurately gathered responses. This study uses a qualitative research design to investigate the factors influencing respondents' medication non-adherence. The study that the major factors identified for non-adherence included busyness, lack of support, forgetfulness, old age, financial constraints, and the complexity of managing multiple medications. Reasons included work commitments, overseas employment, aging, and lack of familial or community support. In terms of alternatives, all respondents emphasized increased fluid intake and proper diet as compensatory measures for missed doses. They also provided various suggestions to enhance adherence, such as maintaining a healthy diet from a young age, strictly following doctors' orders, and adhering to medication regimens. The study emphasizes the significance of alternative therapies and suggests strategies for improved medication adherence, including programs, raising awareness, reminders, and fostering family support.
