Abstract:

Mangrove ecosystems offer several services and benefits to society. Its role in climate change mitigation through its carbon sequestration capacity has been given substantial importance. However, published information on mangrove ecology, specifically on the Island of Negros, is very limited. Here, we assessed the species composition, stand characteristics, and carbon content of mangroves in Punta Taytay, Bacolod City was undertaken. Transect line plot method and allometric equations were used to quantitatively describe the site’s biodiversity and vegetation and to provide estimations of both above and belowground biomass. Nine plots with sizes 10 x 10 m2 each were established. Data in species composition identified 442 mangroves belonging to five species from four families. Avicennia marina, comprising 330 of the sampled individuals, was found to be the most important species, with an important value of 143.46. Community structure analysis revealed a DBH mean of 33.34 cm stand basal area of 2.71 m2 ha?¹, and a mean density of 4933.33 n ha?¹, which is relatively lower when compared to rich mangrove ecosystems in the Philippines. A diversity (H' = 1.37), similar to most mangrove stands and (J' = 0.85), denoting evenly distributed species, were also noted. Allometric equations calculated 223.24 mg ha?¹ as the total biomass and estimated carbon content of 100.76 mg ha?¹, which equates to 369.79 mg ha?¹ of CO? being sequestered. This implies that the mangrove site has the potential to sequester carbon dioxide. Lastly, evaluation of physicochemical factors revealed that the location is conducive to mangrove growth and survival. The gathered data provides baseline information that will support community-based conservation strategies in the area.
