Discipline: planning (urban, rural and regional)

Abstract:

After the birth of a city or province is the birth of a market. Historical accounts in the place can be known through the establishment of a market with its cultural and economic activities. This study focuses on the physical space of San Andres market in Manila because it has undergone reconstruction and is now handled by a private company thru the joint venture agreement which is an example of what we called Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The theory of Henri Lefebvre’s Spatial Triad particularly the spatial practice was mainly used as a model for the study. At the end, the researcher was able to create a map using four Filipino methodology, pagmamasid, pakikipanayam, pagtatanong-tanong at pakikipagpalagayang-loob, in order to establish the changes brought in the physical space of the market. It appears in the map that there is a clear dominance of private company over the space since there is a larger portion for the mall compare to the market. It is a clear manifestation of neoliberalism since the private company was able to devour the public sector relative to its activities and system in the delivery of product and service inside and outside the market.
