Unveiling Cultural Narratives: A Comprehensive Analysis of Topics and Themes in Isinay Folk Song Lyrics

Abstract:
This study conducted a detailed literary analysis of the folk songs of the Isinay people of the municipalities of Bambang, Dupax del Sur, and Aritao in the province of Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, aiming to uncover the prevalent topics and themes within their lyrics. Utilizing the Functional Theory, the research examines 28 folk songs, categorizing them into various topics including love and marriage, wisdom, lullabies, work songs, death and mourning, pleas for help, and religious sentiments. Through close reading and thematic analysis, the study reveals that these songs reflect the cultural, historical, and emotional landscape of the Isinay people. Key findings illustrate that love and courtship themes resonate deeply, capturing universal emotions, while wisdom songs convey life lessons and work songs foster community during labor. Additionally, themes of sorrow, longing, and spiritual connection are articulated in various contexts, showcasing diverse human experiences and cultural values. This comprehensive analysis not only enhances appreciation for Isinay folk traditions but also emphasizes the importance of understanding their literary elements to grasp their profound meanings.
