Abstract:

A Grammar-based Worktext in English 8 was designed and developed in this study as supplementary material for Grade 8 learners. This worktext aimed to enhance grammar proficiency, particularly in the use of grammatical signals, and followed the design and development research method. This worktext, “GRAMMARAMA” , was the first grammar-based worktext in Laguna College of Business and Arts. Through purposive sampling, the worktext was implemented among thirty-three (33) Grade 8 students, and the validators included 13 English secondary teachers from Laguna College of Business and Arts, one Doctor of Philosophy in English student, and one Junior High School Assistant Principal and master’s degree holder expert from the same institution. The evaluation utilized an adopted instrument for assessing the worktext’s quality. Student respondents answered researcher-made and validated pretest and posttest after the intervention. Using a four-point Likert Scale, mean, and Paired Samples t-test for independent samples, GRAMMARAMA was found to be highly valid based on validators’ assessments in terms of objectives, directions, topics, and practical exercises (3.87, 3.90, 3.90, 3.88). The level of acceptability of the worktext, as measured by clarity, usefulness, presentation, and suitability, was highly acceptable (3.93, 3.88, 3.85, 3.96). There was a significant difference (p-value .000) between the pretest (82.94 Satisfactory) and posttest (89.52 Very Satisfactory) scores of the Grade 8 students. Findings revealed that the GRAMMARAMA, the developed Grammar-based Worktext in English 8, is effective in improving grammar proficiency among Grade 8 learners, as demonstrated by the significant difference in their pretest and posttest results.
