Artificial Intelligence Utilization in Enhancing Student Performance in Language Courses of One University in Batangas Province

Eika A. Bucog

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

The study explored the utilization of artificial intelligence in enhancing students’ performance in language courses of one university in Batangas Province. It described the profile of the respondents in terms of sex, year level, program, and most used AI tools for writing, reading, listening, and speaking. The study also determined the respondents’ utilization of AI in terms of language improvement, confidence enhancement, and attitude; identified their English language performance in writing, reading, listening, and speaking; tested the significant differences in responses when grouped according to profile variables; and examined if there was a significant relationship between AI utilization and academic performance in English language courses. Based on the results, a language enhancement program was proposed to further improve English language learning. The study employed a descriptive research design with a quantitative approach. A total of 384 first- and secondyear college students from Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas participated in the study. Data were gathered through an online survey created using Google Forms. Results showed that most respondents were male, in their first year, and enrolled in the Lyceum International Maritime Academy (LIMA) program. ChatGPT and YouTube were the most frequently used AI tools across the four language macro-skills. Most respondents agreed with the indicators regarding AI utilization in improving language skills, boosting confidence, and shaping positive attitudes. Similarly, they expressed agreement on indicators related to their performance in writing, reading, listening, and speaking. A highly significant relationship was found between AI utilization and students’ English language performance, supporting the development of the proposed enhancement program.
