Abstract:
This study examines De La Salle University’s (DLSU) ongoing efforts to establish
itself as the top private research university in the Philippines. An interview with Dr.
Raymond Girard R. Tan, DLSU Vice President for Research and Innovation and a
Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Academician, on
November 23, 2023, provided significant insights into DLSU’s strategic plans. The
interview was part of the DLSU-EDCOM II Policy Research Grants project entitled,
“Establishing Targeted Human Resource Development Partnerships between the
Philippines’ First Tier Research-Intensive Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
and Second Tier Research-Intensive State Universities and Colleges (SUCs).” The
interview also emphasized the need for clearer distinctions between teaching and
research universities and advocates for greater collaboration between Philippine
HEIs and SUCs. It concluded that a strong research university system is essential
for national development and global competitiveness, which urges increased
collaboration across government, academe, and industry.
