Discipline: Environmental and Public Health
Abstract:
The aging population in General Santos City necessitates an understanding of the clinical profile of geriatric patients to address their healthcare needs effectively. This study aims to describe this profile and identify areas for improvement in healthcare delivery. This descriptive study utilized a modified Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) to evaluate the clinical profile of 377 geriatric respondents in General Santos City. Data on medical conditions, medication adherence, financial support, and spiritual care needs were collected and analyzed. Findings indicated a high prevalence of hypertension (27.80%) among the geriatric population. A concerning 84.30% of respondents reported a lack of medication for various illnesses. Additionally, limited financial support from the government or awareness of available programs was noted. The study also highlighted the importance of spiritual care in providing holistic care for geriatric patients. This study revealed significant gaps in healthcare delivery for the geriatric population in General Santos City. Hypertension management, improved medication access, increased awareness of financial support program, and integration of spiritual care are crucial areas for intervention and educating Filipino households about elderly care. As an intervention, a manual for nursing interns of General Santos Doctors' Medical School Incorporated was developed. Further research is warranted to assess the effectiveness of this manual and to develop additional targeted strategies to enhance the health and well-being of older adults in the city.
