The term "elite" is derived from the Latin "eligere" which means to choose. It was first used in the French' language around the 14th century to refer to a choice of persons, first of all in the military terminology - "hommes d' elite" and "compagnie d' elite". In the 15th century, Froissart applied it to "meilleurs des meilleurs" (best of the best).
