Social Adjustment of School-Aged Children with Cochlear Implant

Abstract:

The study examined the social adjustment in terms of level of independence and perceived competence of profound deaf school-aged children who received cochlear implantation (CI) 2 to 4 years back . Participants were 50 parents and 50 teachers of the children who received cochlear implant 2-4 years back and with an age range of 6-14 years. The sample of the study was drawn by using purposive sampling and snowball sampling techniques. In order to measure the social adjustment of children with CI, Social Skills Scale (Khan, 2005) was employed. This scale was developed on 8 factors with 56 items. These Items were examined on four response categories from always to never having scores from 4 to 1. After administering the scale on 50 parents and 50 teachers of children with CI having age range from 6-14 years and using implant from last 2-4 years of time, the data was analyzed on SPSS by using the statistic techniques of mean, standard deviation and t-test. Parents and teachers were satisfied with the social skills of the child after CI but were uncertain about perceived competencies 2 of children with CI through Social Skills Scale. Findings suggest the need of strong follow up and rehabilitation process with mainstream setting with the help of parents for the children who got CI.
