In this report, we limit the term ''business" to commerce and industry. We approach the problem of morality in business from the standpoint of management the individual manager faced with assessing the morality of a specific business decision.
This report presupposes acceptance of the proposition that a man should be governed by his conscience not only in his private life but also in the conduct of his occupation as a businessman or professional.
It rejects the position of those who hold implicitly or otherwise, that business should be governed by no other standard than that which serves the pursuit of profit. Such a position, in the first place, is untenable for any businessman who professes at the same time to be Christian. Furthermore few businessmen if, any, would maintain such a position openly; for business largely depends for its acceptance by the community on the semblance at least, if not the reality, of adherence to the standards of morality. No business would long survive if it did not enjoy a measure of public confidence in the integrity of the men behind it.
