This study entitled “Students’ Performance in Departmental Examinations in Selected Core Subjects of the Mathematics and Physics Department: A Formative Evaluation” aimed to evaluate the performance of the students in their departmental examinations in MATH 113 (College Algebra) and PHYS003L1 (Physics 1) subjects. In evaluating the departmental examination results, faculty-related factors and student-related factors were considered.
For faculty-related factors, age, gender, civil status, highest educational attainment and years in teaching were measured in the study to find out if these variables really affected the students; level of performance in their departmental examinations. The concerned faculty members were from the TIP-Quezon City, Mathematics and Physics Departmental. With regard to student-related factors, course and year level were considered and measured as well.
After the data had been evaluated, the findings were not that overwhelming because of the poor performance of the students in their departmental examination in both MATH113 (College of Algebra) and 1st semester 2007-2008. The faculty related factors did not affect students’ performance. Findings also revealed factors did not affect students’ performance. Findings also revealed that engineering students performed better than the students who belong to the other courses and the year level had no effect on students’ performance.
