China is a many-layered affair— geographically, socially, and economically. Through the mist that has enveloped her down the centuries; the world could glimpse the many colors and varied hues of her landscape, climate, traditions, and people. But strong political control these past decades has darkened the mist, giving to the casual observer a deceiving impression that the kaleidoscope that is China is no more. Many have fallen prey to the tendency of oversimplifying the problem and mystery of China today; of giving out one-sentence platitudes; one-sided, categorical views. Sinologists, "China-watchers", or just plain interested and informed "China kibitzers" have, especially, these past years, warned against such a tendency. More so, if such an unrealistic evaluation is to be the basis of Western policies and attitudes towards her.
