In the year that had elapsed between Davis' decision to leave the Roman Catholic profession and the publication of the book explaining his position, a voluminous amount of material had already come out on evaluations of his decision. In the year since the book was published, the flurry of commentary has increased rather than abated; indeed the book's author welcomes the barrage it evokes, "So now I leave my book ... for criticism and discussion. I ask for no quarter intellectually. I want to learn from others." (p. 272). Thus, A Question of Conscience by Charles Davis has grown in stature to assume proportions of a classic apologia within the span of a year.
