Abstract:

Authentic media materials such as video and web-based articles provide teachers with an instructional alternative for the ESL/EFL classroom and students with a new way to absorb English. This paper provides an outline of a method of building an English as a Second Language (ESL) discussion class around the use of authentic media materials. The incorporation of authentic video and internet-based articles is spotlighted. This paper discusses how authentic media materials can be used to motivate and hold the interest of students. The paper also discusses a method of teaching the class, following a collaborative group approach that encourages students to participate and work through the materials with their peers, taking control of their own learning
