Abstract:

This study aimed to find out the extent of implementation of the Summer Home Assistance on Reading by Parents (SHARP) Program, and the challenges or problems of the participants which included the Grade IV struggling readers, their parents and the teachers involved in the Program. Based on the results, the study also aimed to craft an improvement plan to make it more effective. The respondents of the study were the 30 grade IV struggling readers, 30 parents of the learners and 15 teachers of Perfecto B. Salada Elementary School of Polomolok East District in the Division of South Cotabato. Findings of the study showed that the SHARP Program was very highly implemented as shown by very high ratings in terms of Attainment of Objectives, Teaching Strategies, and Availability and Adequacy of Learning Resources. In terms of challenges or problems, the Grade IV learners found it most challenging that their parents do not have the time to help them in their at-home reading activities; they also claimed to have difficulty in reading because they do not know how to unlock or pronounce the words they encounter when reading. On the part of the parents-participants, they did not have time to assist their children in at-home reading because they are both working. For teacher-participants, they found parents not cooperating with teachers most challenging, and since these parents did not cooperate, the teachers also had a hard time discipling their learners.
