Discipline: Education

Abstract:

This study explores how a private university in China develops and sustains comparative and competitive advantages to achieve long-term institutional sustainability amid globalization and rapid technological change. Using a qualitative single-case study design, data were collected through interviews, document analysis, and observations involving 12 key stakeholders, and analyzed under the frameworks of social constructionism and interpretivism. Findings revealed that the university’s comparative advantages lie in its specialization in engineering and technology, faculty development, and strong industry linkages. Its competitive advantages stem from strategic partnerships, pedagogical innovation, digital transformation, and international collaborations. These initiatives collectively enhance sustainability through improved resource efficiency, global visibility, and financial diversification. The study extends theoretical understanding of institutional competitiveness in higher education and provides managerial insights for fostering innovation, governance, and stakeholder engagement toward sustainable university development.
