Abstract:

Personality Types, Motivational Factors, and Reading Performance of High School Students

This study identified personality types among high school students. It also identified the motivational factors and levels of reading comprehension. The sample was three hundred two (302) students from Rizal High School in Pasig City. They took the Achievement Motivation and Learning Strategies Survey (AMLSS), Myers- Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and Reading Comprehension California Achievement Test (RCCAT).

 

Data was analyzed using the t-test of difference between means and Pearson Product correlation. Level of significance was set at .05.

 

The study found that a majority of the second year high school students were inclined to be extraverted, sensing, thinking, and judging types. The motivational level of the students showed that they always did their best during examinations and liked to be successful in everything they undertake. Results indicated that extraverts outperformed the introverts in the reading comprehension test.

 

Moreover, extraverts demonstrated positive behavior in their English test. The judging types made use of effective methods in achieving higher academic performance compared with the perceiving types. Likewise, students with high scores in the five motivational factors also performed better in the reading comprehension test.
